Hil Scott
Printmaker and Painter
From the first etching I made in 1965 I have been intrigued and fascinated by printmaking of all kinds, from all forms of intaglio, to wood cut and wood engraving, lino cut, silk screen and lithography. However I also love to draw and paint although painting has been rather neglected.
I am often asked what kind of pictures I make, it is a question I can’t answer as I am always moving and changing.
So you will just have to look and see.
1965-1967
City and Guilds School of Art, Kennington, London
Foundation + 1st Year Painting & Printmaking.
1976-1979
City and Guilds School of Art, Kennington, London
Diploma in Fine Art Graphics.
Whilst at college I had several commissions, such as designing and overseeing construction of Floats for the Lord Mayor’s Show and collaborations with other students, such as a large decorative hand painted map of the world for the board room of a city accountancy firm.
1979-2000
Since leaving college I have tended to sell my work myself through outlets such as:
- Galleries and mixed and solo shows.
- Markets: St Martin in the Fields market, St James’s Piccadilly market, Camden Lock market, Apple market in Convent Garden, as well as occasional others, selling my small etchings and hand made cards, posters and t shirts etc.
- Art fairs: The Cotton Centre Tooley St, Riverside Studios Hammersmith, Citibank, Liberties Regent St, Art’93 Islington Design Centre, Battersea Art Fair, all in London, others elsewhere, selling larger work, paintings, prints and drawings as well as my small etchings and hand made cards, posters and t shirts etc.
- Designing and making to order, letterheads, invitations, ex libris, catalogues, greetings/special occasion cards and so on, for businesses, the music industry and private clients and small galleries, from my studio and on commission, drawings and paintings of clients houses and gardens, participating in several books and articles about drawing and painting.
2005 ONWARDS
I started to work with photographs, using photo etching, combined with more traditional printmaking and drawing methods, as my medium. I am now beginning to move into making more mono prints and collages, using the above methods.
I have been using as my subject the changing face of London, the demolition of buildings and the rebuilding of new, the movement of people through the city and the oddities of detail and reflection and strange corners that occur in a large city. However when I move into a different environment, I make different kinds of images.
Most of the images shown on this web site are from 2005 onwards.
I intend to return to painting in the coming years. I have worked in oils, watercolour and other water based media throughout my life, but printmaking has been my principal medium for a long time, so time for a change.
Although I won’t abandon printmaking.
